and some hidden from the outside world. But on a quiet hillside in Mumbai, behind stone walls and dense groves of trees, lies one of the most mysterious and misunderstood places on earth: the Towers of Silence.

भारत में पारसी समुदाय का आना

Zoroastrian पारसी समुदाय का प्राकृतिक नज़रिया
zoroastrian पारसी लोग प्राकृतिक चीज़ों की पवित्रता में पक्का विश्वास करते थे, जो उनकी सबसे पवित्र मान्यताओं में से एक है। आग, पानी और धरती, तीनों को पवित्र माना जाता है। और इसी विश्वास ने उनकी सबसे अनोखी परंपरा को आकार दिया। zoroastrian पारसी धर्म में, यह माना जाता है।कि मौत के बाद इंसान का शरीर रीति-रिवाजों के हिसाब से अशुद्ध हो जाता है,।सड़न की ताकतों से दूषित हो जाता है।शरीर को ज़मीन में दफ़नाने से धरती अपवित्र हो जाएगी। इसे जलाने से आग गंदी हो जाएगी,
और इसे पानी में डुबाने से एक और पवित्र चीज़ अपवित्र हो जाएगी। इसलिए, पारसी आसमान की ओर मुड़ते हैं। उनके लिए, शरीर को जीवन के चक्र में वापस लाने का सबसे प्राकृतिक और सबसे कम नुकसानदायक तरीका था उसे धूप में रखना और पक्षियों के द्वारा मृत्य शरीर को साफ़ करना। इस प्रथा को डोमेई, या sky funeral आकाशीय अंतिम संस्कार के नाम से जाना जाने लगा । मुंबई में, जो दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी पारसी आबादी में से एक है, silence tower मालाबार हिल पर टोंगरवाड़ी नाम के जंगल वाले इलाके में हैं।
Tower of silence का structure बनावट और अंतिम संस्कार की प्रक्रिया
टावर ऑफ़ साइलेंस एक गोल पत्थर का structure बनावट है, जो आम तौर पर 20 से 25 फीट ऊंचा होता है। इसके ऊपर एक चपटा plateform चबूतरा है जो तीन एक के अंदर बने रिंग में बंटा हुआ होता है बाहरी रिंग पुरुषों के लिए, बीच का रिंग महिलाओं के लिए और अंदर का रिंग बच्चों के लिए है। जब किसी व्यक्ति की मौत होती है, तो उसके शरीर को प्लेटफॉर्म पर रखा जाता है।
पारंपरिक रूप से, गिद्ध, जो प्रकृति के सबसे कुशल Recycle करने वाले पंछी गिद्ध कुछ ही मिनटों में नीचे उतरते है और एक घंटे से भी कम समय में, शरीर हड्डियों तक सिमटा देते है।तेज़ गर्मी और धूप से सड़ने के बाद, बचे हुए हिस्सों को आखिर में एक बीच वाले कुएं में उतारा जाता है जहाँ वे आस-पास के माहौल को नुकसान पहुँचाए बिना अपने आप सड़ जाते है ।यह प्रक्रिया न केवल Ecological पारिस्थितिक थी बल्कि आध्यात्मिक भी थी। यह पवित्र तत्वों को शुद्ध रखते हुए आत्मा की मुक्ति का प्रतीक भी है ।
But in recent decades, this ancient system has faced a crisis like never before. Across India, vulture populations have declined by more than 90%. You might ask, what’s causing this? So, a widely used veterinary drug called diclofenac is harmless to cows but deadly to scavenging birds. This is the real reason behind the vultures’ decline.
Sacred Tradition is a topic of discussion today
The fight to preserve their traditional rights continues. But this process is no longer as rapid as it once was. The entire process has slowed considerably.
This has created a painful dilemma: how to preserve a sacred tradition when nature itself is changing? Different Parsi communities have proposed different solutions.
Some suggested installing solar concentrators to speed up the decomposition process. Others debated whether burial or cremation should be allowed. This debate continues today and reflects a community grappling with modernity and identity.
Although the Towers of Silence are located between Mumbai and several other Indian cities, entry is restricted, and photography is not permitted. This may seem mysterious to outsiders, but to Parsis, it is a matter of great reverence. This place is not a tourist destination. It is a sacred place, a final resting place, and a symbol of their ancient heritage. Yet, even from outside the walls, these towers are one of Mumbai’s most interesting sights.

It’s clear that the Tower of Silence are more than just buildings. They offer a glimpse into one of humanity’s oldest religions, a reminder of how cultures find meaning in life and death. And even today, hidden among the trees of Mumbai, they stand as a testament to the courage of a community that crossed oceans to preserve its faith.
