Crater Lake In Maharashtra -महाराष्ट्र में उल्कापिंड से बना लोनार क्रेटर झिल

परिचय:

Lonar Lake, located in the Buldhana district of the Indian state of Maharashtra, is a magnificent geological treasure. This lake is no ordinary lake, but a reminder of the time when geological forces—a meteorite struck the Earth with such force that it created a crater, which later filled with water. This crater lake, formed in this way, is one of the rarest lakes of its kind in the world. However, the fact that the meteorite has not yet been discovered remains a mystery.

History of Lonar Lake :

Lonar Crater Lake was formed approximately 50,000 years ago when a high-speed meteorite struck Earth at a speed of approximately 90,000 km per hour. The impact created a crater in the basalt rocks of the Deccan Plateau, which later filled with rain and groundwater, forming a lake.

The diameter of the lake is approximately 1.83 kilometres and the depth is approximately 137 metres.

The water of Lonar is both saline and alkaline, which is different from other common lakes.

Religious and cultural significance:

Lonar is home to many ancient temples, stories, folklore, and religious tales. One famous one is the Daitya Sudan Temple, which tells the tale of the demon Lonasur. Local mythology and folklore states that a demon named Lonasur lived here, who was killed by Lord Vishnu. His blood got on Lord Vishnu’s thumb, and to remove it, the Lord pressed his thumb into the soil, creating a crater. Scientists believe that the lake is approximately 5.7 million years old and was formed by a meteorite impact.

Moreover, Lonar Lake is now part of a protected area, showcasing rich natural biodiversity, birds and wild animals.

This lake is recognized as a National Geo-Heritage Site of India.

Environmental and Conservation Challenges:

Lonar Lake is an important heritage site of India, but it faces several environmental and man-made challenges:

Agricultural activities are releasing chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, etc. into the lake and surrounding soil, which is polluting the water and ecology.

Religious or tourist activities are dumping garbage, plastic, and sewage into and around the lake—causing harm to the lake and wildlife.

Illegal construction, encroachment, felling of trees and misuse of surrounding land are posing a threat to the original beauty of the lake.

Fluctuations in water levels are also a concern—recent reports indicate that the lake’s water level has risen in the past few years.

How to reach Lonar Lake:

Airplane: The nearest airport is Aurangabad Airport, about 140 km from the lake. From there, you can reach Lonar by taxi or bus.

Train: The nearest railway station is Jalna Railway Station, about 90 km from the lake. Taxis and buses are available from there.

Road: Lonar is accessible by bus or car fromother major cities in Maharashtra, such asMumbai,

When to visit Lonar Lake:

October to March is the best time to visit—the weather is pleasant during this time, the temperature is good, and the surrounding greenery creates a beautiful ambiance.

During the monsoon season (June-September), trekking can be difficult due to rain, slippery paths, and high water levels. In summer, temperatures soar, making trekking difficult.

Precautions while visiting Lonar Lake:

  • The lake water is salty and alkaline—do not go into the water.
  • There are steep climbs and descents to the crater rim, so wear proper, sturdy shoes.
  • Don’t leave garbage, plastic, bottles, etc. anywhere. Take care of the environment.
  • If necessary, hire a local guide. This makes it easier to understand the history and significance of the crater, lake, and surrounding temples and environment.
  • Food and drinks may not be okay—so bring water and some light food.

A living place:

Some government resorts and lodges (like MTDC Lonar Lake Resort) around the lake are an option for staying there.

Current challenges and “scams”—what to watch out for:

While tourism and conservation efforts are underway, tourists may also be vulnerable to scams or fraud due to local and administrative challenges—especially for first-time visitors. It’s important to keep the following points in mind.

Beware of guides and taxi drivers:

Sometimes, unlicensed local guides or taxi drivers may charge extra fees or offer illegal routes into the lake/crater—which can be dangerous. Therefore, only seek help from a reputable source or a certified guide.

Avoid big promises and promotions:

If you hear that the lake water has “miraculous properties” (such as special healing qualities), be wary of such claims. The lake water is salty and alkaline; therefore, it is not safe to bathe in or drink.

Beware of those buying and selling from local shops or contractors:

If someone starts selling local goods, souvenirs, etc.—negotiate them first, bargain, and if possible, only buy from a resort or certified shop.

At the end of this blog:

Lonar Lake—a unique confluence of geological wonders, historical-religious heritage, natural beauty, and biodiversity. If we understand, care, and respect the nature and culture surrounding this lake and its surroundings, visiting it will be not only fun but also enjoyable.
